Likely also mainly used to counter ambushes and whatnot against the HUKBALAHAB or better known as the "Huks", a communist guerrilla fighting force during WWII turned insurgency post-war. Who were eventually nullified.
The Huks were one of only three communist insurgencies successfully quelled by government forces during the Cold War. In the Huks case, it was done via a land reform and COIN tactics
In the case of Greece, it was done by sealing off the border with Yugoslavia and a withdrawal of Yugoslav support for the Greek communist insurgents following the Tito-Stalin spilt after 1947
In the case of Malaya, it was done via COIN tactics, a relocation of Malayan Chinese squatters from the jungle fringes to guarded New Villages and geography (as Malaya's only land borders are with Thailand and Singapore, so the Malayan Communists couldn't be resupplied like the Vietcong were in South Vietnam)
