Hanoi's name has remained quite constant throughout history, with varied alterations. "Thăng Long" is the initial name (Rising Dragon) given to the city after its founding by King Lý Thái Tổ in 1010 AD. This name was changed to "Lý Thành" (City of Lý) in 1054. Its yet another name was given during the Le Dynasty (1397-1788)-"Đông Đô" (Eastern Capital) to mean the capital city in eastern power. Finally, Emperor Gia Long renamed the city "Hà Nội" in 1802, meaning "Inner City" or "Capital City," given its location within the control and protection walls surrounding the old citadel. Thus, Hanoi has had many different names but has borne with pride its current one-Hà Nội-since the early 19th century.
