Singapore Airlines Bangkok-Singapore 787-10 Dreamliner Business Class First Experience (SQ983 BKK-SIN)
You can choose between Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways when booking with Star Alliance Miles from Bangkok to Singapore. If you fly on Thai Airways, you have the opportunity to enjoy a free half-hour massage at the Royal Orchid Spa; if you fly on Singapore Airlines, you can experience the latest 787-10 business class . After struggling for a while, the 787-10 finally won and I chose Singapore Airlines’ late flight to Singapore. The BKK-SIN route is operated by three traditional airlines: Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways and Cathay Pacific. Cathay Pacific has only one flight a day because it has fifth freedom rights; Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways have five or six flights a day, so there are many time choices. Among the three airlines, Singapore Airlines’ business class is the cheapest, costing more than 13,000 baht round trip (2019/9 price).
Regardless of the booking class, there is a 40 kilogram checked baggage allowance. The only difference lies in the number of miles that can be accumulated, whether miles can be used to upgrade, and the restrictions on changes and cancellations.
Singapore Airlines has ordered a total of 35 787-10 aircraft this time and has been receiving them since March 2018. There are currently 12 787-10s in operation, making it the first airline in the world to use the 787-10. The aircraft is equipped with 36 business class seats and 301 economy class seats, for a total of 337 seats.
The business class cabin adopts a 1-2-1 staggered design, with each seat facing forward and allowing direct access to the aisle. If you are flying alone, the seats on both sides have better privacy (it is recommended to avoid 16A and 16K without windows). If you want to chat with friends, it is more convenient to choose the adjacent seats in the middle.
The aircraft I took has only been flying for more than four months and is very new. The silver cabin and seat shells are paired with brown seats, which are calm and modern. The cocoon-shaped seats are more enveloping than the business class seats I have sat in before. Looking diagonally from the rear, it is basically a small box. The privacy is very good. Even if you sit in the middle, you will not see the passengers sitting next to you.
The inner side of the cocoon-shaped seat is made of diamond-patterned suede, which looks very textured, and the pillow material is also very comfortable. The sloping shoulder three-point design of the seat belt may make petite passengers feel stuck and a little uncomfortable, but I think this part is fine.
The seat can lie flat 180 degrees and has a flat length of 76 inches (193 cm), so most passengers will have no problem lying flat. There are lights under the footwells and footrests, making it easier to grab things. Compared with the Thai Airways A350-900 business class's cloth-covered footrests and the carpeted storage space below, they are less likely to wear out and are easier to clean.
The headphone hook of the Evergreen 787-9 is in the locker, and the vanity mirror is on the inside of the push-button door. Compared with the design of Singapore Airlines, I like it better, especially for girls to touch up their makeup. A closer mirror is easier to use.
Escape instructions, in-flight magazines, and in-flight shopping are placed in the storage space on the back of the seat in front of you. The 787 has a unique five-section color-changing window, but this section is not used at all for night flights. The TV is an 18-inch HD high-resolution touch screen commonly used in business class nowadays. The picture quality is very good and there are many movies to choose from.
Although the screen is touch-sensitive, because the distance is too far, most people still use a remote control. And now the remote control has a touch function, which is very convenient! In addition to adjusting the preset seat angle, the control buttons next to the seats can also control TV switches, calling flight attendants, do not disturb, and lights from here. The dining table is pulled out from under the screen in front. When opened, the table top is quite large. I prefer this design to the design that is stored next to the seat.
Not long after, the flight attendant presented a beautifully printed menu with a lot of alcoholic beverages to choose from. Unfortunately, I don’t drink much. The plane took off at a little after 8 p.m., and a light meal was provided. There were three main meals to choose from: confit chicken, stir-fried beef in XO sauce with dry-roasted Yi noodles, and salmon egg fried rice.
Because the flight was not long, salads and desserts were also served together, and bread was distributed by the flight attendants. There were a variety of breads to choose from, but almost all of them were European-style breads. The food tastes ordinary, I only took a few bites to try the taste. I don’t know if I was too full in the VIP room, which caused the food to be less delicious.
After the meal, the lights in the cabin were dimmed, and after another hour or so of flying, we were ready to land.
This time I had a good experience flying on the Singapore Airlines 787-10 Dreamliner. The overall design was high-quality and the service was good. Unfortunately, the flight was too short and there was no time to lie down and sleep. Nowadays, 787-10 is the main force of Singapore Airlines' regional routes. One of the two daily flights from Taipei to Singapore is operated by 787-10. Friends who want to travel to Singapore or transfer flights should have a good chance of taking it.
