After climbing up the Our Lady of Guia Observatory on the Bishop Hill and overlooking the beautiful scenery of the three islands of Macau, go down the mountain along the nearby Guia Alley. There are steps built next to Xikeng Street, from which you can walk directly to the A-Po Well Street below, and not far ahead is A-Po Well Square.
A-Po Well Square looks ordinary, just a small square with two ancient banyan trees and a kiosk in the middle. But it is a very famous place in Macau, which is mainly related to a legend. The so-called A-Po means grandma in Cantonese. According to legend, in the Ming Dynasty, an old woman built a pool here to store mountain spring water to facilitate the surrounding residents to take water for drinking. People called this pool A-Po Well. Because of the water source, this place developed into a settlement and is one of the earliest residential areas in Macau.
