Surrounding the square are various government offices and foreign embassies. Here, in 1945, President Ho Chi Minh declared the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, following the success of the "August Revolution" in Vietnam. From that time onwards, this square becoming, just as Tiananmen Square stands for China, the political epicenter of Vietnam. On the western side lies the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum; on the northwest side are the former residence and the Presidential Palace; and on the southwest side is the Ho Chi Minh Museum. The One Pillar Pagoda adds to the beauty of the surroundings right across the museum.
