The only legal red-light district in Asia is in Singapore. Singapore's Geylang is relatively smaller and less famous than famous red-light districts such as Kabukicho in Shinjuku, Japan, or Nana Plaza in Bangkok, Thailand. But interestingly, it is the only red-light district in Asia where sex work can be legally conducted. Legal sex workers in Singapore's red-light districts basically have their right to work protected, but they need to obtain a license and pay taxes, and there are very strict regulations.
Singapore has issued about 1,000 legal licenses to workers, commonly known as "yellow cards." Only people holding yellow cards can conduct transactions. In addition to having to undergo a monthly health check, yellow card holders must also meet the following conditions:
(1) be between 21 and 35 years old;
(2) not be a Muslim;
(3) not be male on the ID card;
(4) foreign workers must come from a list of approved countries.
(5) The "yellow card" for foreigners has the same visa status as the WP. They must leave Singapore within two years and are not allowed to enter Singapore with the same status for life.
