Shinshindo is a famous bakery in Kyoto. It was opened in 1913 by Mr. and Mrs. Sagi Saiki and Haina. It has a history of more than 100 years. Many people on the Internet recommend the all-you-can-eat breakfast at Jinjintang. When I went to Kyoto several times before, I either had breakfast directly at the hotel or left early in the morning to catch up with my schedule. It was not until this time that I had the opportunity to try it.

Jin々DO Sanjo Kawaramachi Store (official website)
Location: The Royal Park Hotel Kyoto Sanjo 1F
Tel: (075) 241-1179
Business hours: bakery 8:00~21:00 / restaurant 7:30~20:00 (breakfast service time 7:30~11:00)

Shinshindo has 11 stores in Kyoto, but the only branches that offer all-you-can-eat bread are the Sanjo Kawaramachi store, the Teramachi store, the Fucho-mae store, and the Kitayama store near the botanical garden. Among them, the Sanjo Kawaramachi store is the most popular, and it’s only a 7-8 minute walk from MAJA HOTEL KYOTO where I live.

Because I was taking a flight back to Taiwan that day, I was a little worried that there would be too many people queuing up, which would delay my departure. Fortunately, there was still room available when I arrived at 7:50 in the morning, so I was able to get seated without queuing.

The restaurant in Sanjo Branch used to have open tables and chairs. I wonder if it was related to the epidemic. The middle seat was changed to a semi-open box seat, which provides more privacy and is more comfortable to sit on.

Breakfast menu

Breakfast is divided into three categories: Premium Breakfast, Special Breakfast and Morning Plate. The first two categories almost have all-you-can-eat bread. As long as you see the words "ブレッドサービス" in front of the price, it means that the bread basket service is included. (Click here to see the latest menu)

Premium Breakfast is like an American breakfast, with egg dishes, ham steak/sausage, salad, bread basket, drinks, and the most expensive one also has yogurt.

Special Breakfast Except for the continental breakfast which is bread + drink, the other breakfast is soup + bread basket + drink.

There are also general breakfast options, among which French toast + yogurt is very attractive to me. I will choose this next time I come.

Dining experience

I ordered the premium breakfast with poached eggs (¥1,200), which contains protein and vegetables. It feels more nutritionally balanced than the special breakfast. However, after finishing this plate, I was already six to seventy percent full, and there was not much room for bread.

The accompanying drinks include coffee, black tea, milk, Espresso, juice (orange juice, apple juice, tomato juice), ginger ale, and I ordered hot coffee.

When the meal was finished at 1 o'clock, the waiter brought the bread basket. Because I wanted to eat the main meal first, I didn't choose bread for fear that it would get cold if I left it. Unexpectedly, by the time I finished my main meal and wanted to choose bread, the bread basket was half empty. Besides croissants and brioche, there are only a few sliced French breads, not even mountain bread or sliced toast, which is much different from what was shared on the Internet in the early days.

The point is that the bread is not kept warm and is all cold bread. If I had known it was cold, I would have chosen it first and there would have been more choices. (The photo was taken when I was about to leave, and I had to make up some bread)

In the end I only had a croissant, a brioche and two small slices of French bread.

Before leaving, I took a look at the bread selling area on the other side of the store. The bread looked delicious.

Most of the top 5 popular items are not included in the bread basket, and only the top-ranked croissant is available.

When I left around 9:00, there was already a long queue. It was indeed a popular store!

For Jinjintang’s all-you-can-eat breakfast, the price of more than NT$200 is really cheap. But maybe my expectations were too high. I was a little disappointed because the bread basket was all cold bread and there weren't many choices. If I come here next time, I will probably order my favorite French toast + yogurt. The bread should be warmed to taste better!
