El Violinista "The Violin Artist", 1876, Juan Luna (Philippine Lopez) Collection of the Museum (Lopez Myseum), now on loan from the National Gallery Singapore]

Juan Luna (Juan Luna, 1857-1899): Philippine (Spanish colonial period) painter and sculptor, born in A wealthy middle-class family from Luzon Island in the Philippines, he went to Spain to study painting as an adult. Mainly living in Rome, Madrid, and Paris, he won three gold medals at the Spanish National Art Exhibition and was one of the first Filipino artists to gain international fame.

Early works have classical themes and are based on ancient European history. For example, based on the history of the Ptolemaic dynasty of ancient Egypt, he created "The Death of Cleopatra" (won second place at the Spanish National Exhibition in 1881 and is now in the Prado National Museum, Spain); "The Basement of the Colosseum" "(Spoliarium) (won the first prize at the Spanish National Art Exhibition in 1881 and is now in the National Museum of the Philippines).

He is highly respected in the Philippines and is regarded as the founder of modern Philippine art and a national hero. He was one of the early pioneers of the Republic of the Philippines and had long been involved in political independence activities. The theme of the works during this period was based on the colonial history of the Philippines, and he created the symbolic work "Blood Alliance" representing the independence of the Philippines (it is now placed in a prominent position at the Presidential Palace in Manila, Philippines). Then he created the "Battle of Lepanto" (which depicts the history of Spain's victory over the Turks and symbolizes the victory of Catholicism over the Islamic rulers. This work is closely related to the work of the famous Spanish painter Francisco Padilla Ortiz The Surrender of Granada was presented to the Queen Regent of Spain and exhibited at the Senate House in Madrid), raising Juan Luna's status in the Spanish art world to new heights.

In 1888, he created the most representative and controversial work "Espana y Filipinas" (Espana y Filipinas) in his life. One version is now in the National Gallery of Singapore, and the other is in the Philippines. Pez Museum, now on loan at the National Gallery of Singapore), the goddess in red, representing Spain, holds the goddess in blue, representing the Philippines, from behind, pointing towards the sunny distance. The two goddesses, both wearing olive leaf laurel crowns and dressed as beautifully as the Greek goddess of liberty, marched towards the bright distance on flower-covered steps. The controversy lies in the suspicion of glorifying colonialism. There are several versions of this theme painting, which is very popular among collectors.

In 1891, he created "The Unsung Hero" (now in the Museum of the University of Victor Balaguer, Spain), which depicts the daily life of working people and expresses compassion for the people at the bottom and non-violent protest.

Then due to the decline of the Spanish Empire, the style shifted to depicting the "Belle Epoque" and "Gilded Age" of imperialism, showing the glitz, casualness and laziness of the late 19th century. At the same time, he introduced European Impressionist techniques into Southeast Asian art. "Spanish Woman on the Balcony", "Street Flower Shop", etc. are all creations of this period. The styles of the works of this period also included references to Aestheticism, Pre-Raphaelite painting and Decorationism.

In 1892, he shot his wife and mother-in-law to death on suspicion of his wife's infidelity, was imprisoned and released, and then returned to his homeland. He used impressionist techniques to create works with Philippine themes. Later, he went into exile overseas due to the unrest. Before leaving, he created a large number of works with local themes.

After the establishment of the First Republic of the Philippines, he was appointed as the Philippine envoy abroad, but his lobbying abroad had little effect. Family members died one after another for some reason, and the First Republic of the Philippines ceased to exist. He died in Hong Kong in 1899 at the age of 42 because he did not want to live in the Philippines under American rule. It also permanently sealed Southeast Asian modern art in the 19th century.
