Over the centuries, Hanoi saw numerous destructions, relocations and name changes. Much of what we see in modern Hanoi dates from the 19th century onwards during French occupation. Hanoi today has plenty interesting cultural sites, including beautiful colonial buildings such as Vietnam Opera House, Presidential Palace (formerly Palace of the Governor-General of French Indochina), Saint Joseph Cathedral or any branch of State Bank of Vietnam designed by Gustave Eiffel. There are also several fascinating museums including National Museum of Vietnamese History, Vietnamese Women’s Museum or National Museum Of Fine Arts. Many cultural relics lie in Old Quarter like Bach Ma Temple, Ancient House at 87 Ma May St or Silk Street. Hanoi is also famous for its street life food scene as well as night markets and water puppet shows.
