Hanoi was founded in 200 BC, when Vietnam established a pilot city called "Golok City". In 939 AD, Vietnam gained independence from China, and the present-day Hanoi area became the capital of the three feudal dynasties of Ly, Tran and Le, and was known as the "land of millennium cultural relics". In 1010 AD, the founding emperor Ly Thai To issued an edict to designate Hanoi as the capital. In 1945, Ho Chi Minh signed the Declaration of Independence at Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi, marking the beginning of the capital of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam). On July 2, 1976, Vietnam finally achieved unification, and Hanoi officially became the capital. The main tourist attractions in Hanoi include the One Pillar Pagoda, the Temple of Literature, the ruins of the Thang Long Imperial Citadel, the Hanoi Opera House and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum.
