I had heard of Anan before I went to Ho Chi Minh City. It was one of the top 50 restaurants in Asia that year and one of the few restaurants in Vietnam that was shortlisted for the Michelin list. There are a total of 4 restaurants in Vietnam, three of which are in Hanoi, and only Anan is in Ho Chi Minh City. Coincidentally, I decided to go to Ho Chi Minh City at the last minute. I used WhatsApp to book after landing at the airport and got a table at 8:30 pm. Overall, Anan can give 80 points for this experience.
First of all, the environment. Anan is in a very shabby vegetable market. Don't hold on to the beautiful fantasy of high-end restaurants, you won't be disappointed with the environment. The appearance is definitely not very high-end, but after entering, the atmosphere is slightly better. There is a restaurant outside and a bar inside. Except for the small space between the tables, it is still quite chill. Let's talk about the dishes. At Anan, you can choose to order your own dishes or directly order the restaurant's tasting menu. We chose the chef's tasting menu with an average of RMB 1,000 per person. Then we matched the wine ourselves.
The tasting menu we had had a total of 12 dishes, which were basically based on local Vietnamese dishes, with some creative changes. The taste and presentation were good, and the ingredients were also above average. What was a little uncomfortable was that caviar appeared in more than half of the dishes, and the last dessert, coconut ice cream, also had caviar, which was a bit greasy. I think for a menu at this price, it was still in line with expectations.
I was a little dissatisfied with Anan's service. Maybe because it was basically full in every time period, Anan's service speed was a bit slow, and the response to every demand was not so timely. How to say it, Vietnam is a developing country after all, and Anan is a Vietnamese creative restaurant. Don't expect too much. In the spirit of experiencing local characteristics, Anan is still worth checking in.
