In Hanoi, as in many parts of Vietnam, it's generally recommended not to flush toilet paper down the toilet. Instead, you should use the waste bin provided in the bathroom for disposing of toilet paper. This is because the plumbing and sewage systems in many areas are not designed to handle paper and can easily get clogged. Always look for signs or instructions in the bathroom, but when in doubt, it's best to follow this practice.
Sure you can, but do take note that the plumbing system in Hanoi is generally prepared to flush it. It, however, doesn't hurt to keep track of any notice in the toilet stating that the paper should be thrown in the waste bin, because there is an instance when the older buildings or individual houses may not have pipes proper for flushing paper. When this occurs, do remember to discard the paper into a particular bin set for this purpose.
1. The toilets in Hanoi usually have a paper towel dispenser on either side of the door. After reaching for the toilet paper dispenser, you can pull out the roll of toilet paper. Remember to clean your hands before you could take the toilet paper and also ensure to throw the paper roll into the trash.
2. Save handwashing for after you have thoroughly flushed the toilet, cleansing away every bacteria or virus that could otherwise land in the toilet bowl. To flush, rotate the handle clockwise and pull the lever downward. Do not forget to remember, however, that any toilet paper must never be flushed down into the sink: this could cause obstruction in the drain and hence, blockage.
3. After use, just throw the toilet paper into the designated trash bin next to the bathroom or sink, and ensure that each piece of tissue or the wrapper is gone to prevent littering or confusion with others.
